The construction of the iconic London Eye ushered in a new era of Ferris wheel attractions. Plans are currently in motion to bring this unique landmark to international destinations like New York City, Las Vegas and Singapore, but a new proposal could see an addition in Dubai that could dwarf them all.

A massive observatory wheel called the Dubai Eye is set to be constructed later this year, and once completed the 689-foot-tall ride will be the highest of its kind in the world. It will also serve as the centerpiece of a new project dubbed “Bluewaters Island,” which would boast shopping boutiques, live performance venues, restaurants, five-star hotels and more.

“The Dubai Eye will serve as yet another iconic structure and will distinctively dominate the Dubai skyline,” said Abdullah Al Habbai, chairman of a Dubai-based development company. “We are confident ‘Bluewaters’ will develop into a key attraction for the UAE, further enhancing Dubai’s status as the preferred global entertainment and retail hub.”

Once completed, the Dubai Eye and Bluewaters Project should be one of the hottest destinations in the world for luxury travelers. High-class globetrotters already frequent the UAE city, drawn in by its superior designer shopping and modern resorts, but these additions may attract more than 3 million visitors each year.

A ride around the Dubai Eye would give visitors a perfect view of the city’s other iconic structures, such as the Burj Al Arab, Palm Jumeirah and Burj Khalifa, which is the tallest building in the world. You would also get to see a beautiful look at the city’s coastline, as Dubai is situated directly on the turquoise waters of the Persian Gulf and boasts a series of manmade islands and pristine shores.
