The Academy Awards have now come and gone, but for many of the honored films, the real story is just beginning. There’s still plenty of press, DVD releases, special editions and more – but if you really connected with one of this year’s films, you may want to take your experience with them one step further. A fun and exciting way to do this is by allowing your favorite movie to inspire your next travel adventure. Several of the most recognized films from the most recent crop of Oscar nominees have settings in world-class locales, and these spots can serve as the source of some wonderful ideas for your upcoming trip.

Les Miserables
Set in 19th century France, “Les Miserables” tells the story of a large cast of characters living and dying in a nation filled with political unrest. Things have calmed down considerably since then, but that doesn’t mean travelers can’t experience a fascinating vacation to the historic destination. Paris is the centerpiece of much of the action, and travelers today can visit spots like the Victor Hugo Museum or the Cathedral of Notre Dame, which was featured in the book. Globetrotters can even take a tour of the city sewers, although they’ll be pleased to find that these tunnels are clean and dry – a welcome variation from what’s seen in the film.

Of course, if you don’t feel like venturing to France, you can still find other ways to partake in the “Les Miserables” fandom. Consider buying tickets to a performance of the beloved musical in famous theater districts from New York City to London, where the sheer talent of the cast and drama of the story are sure to take center stage.

Life of Pi
Despite the fact that the movie takes place primarily at sea, the visual masterpiece “Life of Pi” can provide a worthy source of inspiration for a trip to India. Many scenes were filmed along the coast of Southern India, and trips to regions like Puducherry and Munnar, as well as more tropical areas like Goa, can make for amazing travel experiences.

Several cities featured in the film have begun taking advantage of its success, creating informational tours and providing plenty of spots perfect for snapping photos. The Indian government is in the process of transforming these locales into prime travel destinations, so globetrotters will soon find it easier than ever to soak up the culture of India while checking out their favorite locations from the film.

Lincoln
A story about one of the most iconic U.S. presidents inspires travel to one city in particular: Washington, D.C. The nation’s capital is the perfect destination for travelers who loved the biopic about the 16th president, and the most curious of minds can find plenty of worthwhile activities. Stops at any of the Smithsonian museums, the Lincoln Memorial, the U.S. Capitol building and the White House offer a peek into the country’s history while also connecting travelers with the legacy of Abraham Lincoln.
